NYC Auto Show Bus Trip
by AL PEINHARDT, Organizer
Just a few days after the sad loss of Ferdinand Alexander “Butzi” Porsche, designer of the 911, nearly 50 Central PA Region PCA members paid respect by taking the yearly bus trip to the New York Auto Show.
For the first time since we’ve been going to the Show, Porsche has revised their display. In addition to the Panamera and Cayman there was a Cayenne diesel, and of course a new 991 and brand new 987 Boxster, in the flesh. Gone was the ubiquitous turntable rotating a red 911. Instead there was a big screen TV display looping videos for the new models.
In fact, big screens were all the rage at this show—room-size, barn-wall-size big screens. The Ford display had a virtual skidpad. Visitors could stand in the middle and see themselves on the wall screen as a virtual Focus drift car did ground-loops around them.
Of course, the Auto Show isn't the only thing going on in NYC on Easter Weekend “Our 2012 Auto Show excursion felt like a mini vacation,” said member John Caceres. “My wife and I spent time walking around, taking in midtown and simply enjoying the day. We met with a family friend for dinner at a great Cuban restaurant on 56th and 8th Ave. Just like NY, the Auto Show was bustling and vibrant and the cars ranged from works of art to utilitarian people movers and of course we had to fight the crowds to get anywhere near the exotics like the Bugatti Veyron.” See John's pics on Photobucket.
But then, NYC is still NYC. Ex-Treasurer Daren Stonesifer said, “First, we decided to hike to the Empire State Building to take the tour to the top. Found out it was a two hour wait and bailed. Then we hiked to NBC studios to do the tour to the top of 30 Rock. Found out it was a 24-hour wait and we bailed. After 35 blocks of walking, we took a cab back to the show.”
On the plus side, the bus didn't need the usual hour to circle the block to the Lincoln Tunnel on the way home. All in all, another great trip to see Porsches in New York.
