2010 Porsche Only Swap Meet
April 24th, 2010
at Giant Center, HersheyPark, Hershey PA
On April 24th the Central Pennsylvania region of the Porsche Club of America held its annual Porsche-Only Swap Meet. The day brought warm temps and sunshine, and set record numbers with vendors and Porsche cars. The vendor gates opened 15 minutes early, at 6:15am, and vendors were rolling in. The event ran like clockwork with few situations in the vendor area.
This is without exaggeration the largest event of its kind on the planet. This year there was a 911 on hand with California license plates, and a couple came all the way from Austria! The Swap just gets bigger and bigger every year. We think it’s only a matter of time until Porsche cottons on to the size of this thing and steps in as a major backer.
Our club really has this event down and running like clockwork. The gates actually opened early to accommodate the droves of vendors and visitors. You could find everything from cars, parts and accessories to models, books and videos for sale. The “Porsche Corral,” where visitors can display their own cars for sale, was jam packed.
As the morning moved forward, the P-cars started rolling in, and again the folks on the gates did an excellent job moving the Porsche drivers into the Porsche Only parking area. Vendor selling, bartering and just talking with friends and potential buyers, including our Club Tent crew—another great job organizing the hundreds of t-shirts and selling out by 11am.
Shift 2 and 3 continued the day by running the pre-reg, the tent goodies and the concours. Again….all ran smoothly. Team, I have to say, Great Job!!! There is a reason this event continues to grow and is considered the largest of its kind: the Central Pennsylvania Region volunteers! You folks rock! PS: I’m putting together the Swap Party. Stay tuned for date and more information.
The Swap includes a same-day People’s Choice Concours and a next-day autocross. The weather, cool but clear, held out for the Saturday event, but Sunday AM the surface was cold and wet. What the heck, that just makes for a more exciting autocross! For the third year running, John Witmer scored the fastest time for a Central PA PCA member in his vintage 911. Congratulations, John!
We treasure this event because we love seeing old friends and so many Porsche afficionados every year. There is no other event like it, anywhere on the planet. We are proud to be a part of it. Check out the video at top, and we’ll see you again next year.
