2010 NYC Auto
Show Bus Trip

April 3rd, 2010

by AL PEINHARDT, Director

Saturday April 3rd was a beautiful warm cloudless day. A perfect day to be working around the house or getting the lawn and flower beds in shape. But a dedicated group of Porschephiles rose early this day to visit the New York Auto show in Manhattan at the Javits Center.

Our bus left Lancaster at 7:00 AM with a few folks from this area and those that wanted choice seats! Our 8:00 AM departure from the Best Western in Middletown nearly filled up the Executive Motor Coach. Destination NYC with a quick stretch stop in New Jersey. Along the way we did a raffle of some Porsche "coffee table" books to break up the ride. It turned out one of President Limbert’s 914s was featured inside. He quickly made an offer to one of the winners and took the book home himself.

Upon our arrival in front of the Javits Center, after the obligatory group photo shoot, I think most of us made a beeline for the Porsche display. For the first time in years, there wasn't a red 911 on the turntable, but one of the spanking new Cayennes. The SUV has a whole new line, particularly the more streamlined hood. Beside that was a full-size model of the Porsche hybrid drive. There was a lot of interest in a new silver Boxter Spyder with a tent-like top and few amenities, built for speed. Missing was the new 918 Spyder Concept car (which I have since learned was on its way to another show, Porsche's new and stronger market...CHINA!). The Porsche display was nevertheless packed shoulder-to-shoulder, unlike many other manufacturer displays.

Martin Steger, a previous guest speaker at one of our meetings, was representing The Racers Group at their display, where various race car drivers signed autographs.

Before our departure we met up with Yasmin, the director of sales for the Auto Show and thanked her for the nice discount on the tickets, with a special bottle of wine and two Porsche glasses.

Unlike previous years, there was no hand-stamping and no readmittance to the show without paying again. (Things are tough all over.) So our crowd scattered over NYC to see the sites.

Webmeister Don Hollway and his son Donovan toured the carrier Intrepid, moored just a few blocks north. On their way back they ran into Sarah Jessica Parker and asked to have their picture taken together. She said, "No."

After our 6PM departure the Disney movie Cars was shown on the ride home back to quiet and peaceful Pennsylvania!
