The weather gods must love Ladew Gardens and the Polo Club. Those involved in the event (from both clubs) know what I'm talking about. The morning of the Porsche Polo Cup looked great outside and all the lights were green on Go! But by noon my phone started ringing ( and wouldn't stop ) as storms rolled through the area. Yet at Ladew they said the weather was perfect-come on. So we did!
I can't speak for others but as I was driving to our event I was thinking to myself there is no way this is going to turn out on a good note and I better start making plans for a rain date, but yet it did! Unbelievable!
At one point in route the rain was so heavy without RainX I wouldn't have been able to see to drive. Two miles from Ladew it stopped raining. One mile out, blue skies! The first thing I did when we got there was put on my sunglasses. From that moment on it was a picture prefect day.
“I heard some distant thunder at noon and called to confirm we were on,” Editor/Webmeister Don Hollway told me. “The word was go, but in ten minutes we had about two inches of rain, hail the size of marbles, trees down across the road, and a general mess to clean up. The TV was showing tornado warnings sweeping across the county. I figured the event was a wash. We finally cleaned up the debris and left an hour late. When we got to the field the sun was out it was nearly dry!”
“Many thanks to Jerry Trone and the Porsche Club for another successful event at Maryland Polo Club,” said P. J. Orthwein, President of the Maryland Polo Club “It's always great fun for the players to play in front of such a wonderful crowd, and we hope to continue building upon the event next year.”
“I have been a PCA member for quite some time but unfortunately never made it to an event,” reported Mike Pavone. “My daughter Michael Marie and I had the great pleasure to join other PCA'ers at the Porsche Polo cup. What a great time. We both really enjoyed ourselves and had the opportunity to meet some really nice folks. Thank you all for making my daughter and I so welcome. We will join you all again soon.”
As in past years, CPA-PCA sponsored the awards for the Porsche Polo Cup. This year's winning team, Monta Santa, jumped out to score first with the White Columns team fighting back hard to try to take the lead. Every time it looked like White Columns was ready to move ahead, Monta Santa stepped up to answer the call. And when I say White Columns was fighting back hard, there's a reason for that. Eddie Cohen, sponsor of the White Columns team, has been playing polo for 20 years and has been driving Porsches for a bit longer than that. At present Eddie has two P-cars and he really wanted to win the Porsche Polo Cup!
That being said, as you can tell from reading the comments from all concerned on the day, everyone that came out to the Porsche Polo Cup was a winner and got to enjoy a fun and user-friendly PCA event. Many thanks to all the players for a top quality game! Congrats to Hugo Pasten for the MVP polo pony, and to P. J. as MVP & high scorer of the day's Porsche Polo Cup. Special thanks to Meghan Hannum for printing the MVP wine labels, Ben Ricci for the brilliant photos and Mike Pavone & Michael Marie for throwing the opening game ball in from their 1981 911 Targa. Look forward to seeing you all at the Porsche Polo Cup to be held in late July 2009.
