This time the rain, which has washed out the past several Central PA events in succession, actually came in handy, if you didn’t mind getting your Porsche wet.

After all, there’s nothing like a little precipitation to level the playing field at the People’s Choice Wash ’n’ Shine Concours. Not that Central PAers are the type of over-obsessive Porschers who take Q-tips to their cars before attending events. But if anybody did, well, after a quick road wash on the way to the annual Crab & Shrimp Feast, they were no more washed and shined than the rest of us!
130 Porschers attended this year’s event, including a few from out of the region, some of whom even went home with prizes. (We in Central PA are nothing, it seems, if not generous.) More on that later.
We went through 85 pounds of shrimp and five bushels of crabs, six cases of soda, a quarter keg of beer and two cases of water. (Probably the looming presence of that local policeman, parked just outside the hall all afternoon, is responsible for that relatively light beer uptake.)
27 Porsche owners braved the rainy weather and signed up for our Wash and Shine Concours. Categories and winners of the event were:

Most likely to get a ticket:
Richard Tokar from the Pocono Region with his highly modified, bright yellow Strosek 968.

Zoom

Most likely to attract to opposite sex:
Curt Stauffer with his bright yellow Boxster. (Pat, better keep an eye on this guy.)

Hottest tires and wheels:
Bob Hall with his Silver 2000 Boxster S. Bob’s splurging for the expensive 18" wheel and tire package has paid off. This is the second year in a row he has won this event.

Most wanted in your garage:
Eric Wahlberg with his 356 convertible. This is also the 2nd year Eric has won this event. He has one sweet Porsche!

Most in need of cleaning:
Mark and Carol Bolt. This was a difficult choice, since all the cars were fairly clean. Mark drove all the way from Lancaster in the rain, so we will hold back on our ribbing for this year.

And anyway, there was a white 1990-vintage 911 out there that was downright dirt-spotted, but whose owner wisely elected not to enter the Concours, leaving the poor Bolts to pick up the tab.
We also held a raffle for everyone that entered the wash and shine. The prizes were a car cleaning kit from Stoner Associates in Lancaster. Winners were Dwayne Plantholt with his ’98 Boxster; Debbie Nuttall with her ’94 968 Cab; and Curt & Pat Stauffer with their 2000 Boxster.
And just so you didn’t have to be a motorhead to be a winner, we had Best Dish Awards, which went to the following food entries: First Place to Mat Willenkin for his Sesame Eggplant dish. Second Place to Joan Baker for her Creamsickle Cake. Third Place ended in a tie between Candace Cothard’s Chocolate Nut Brownies and Sharon Nealy’s Rum Cake.
We also raffled off some PCA embossed beer goblets, won by Levier Byren, Joyce McCorkel, Al Baker, Rich Tokar and Parr McQueen.
Every wash and shine entrant also received a can of spray wax, compliments of Stoner Associates.
Lois and I would like to give a big thanks to Al and Betty Peinhart for their help with collecting registrations, buying the prizes, and helping with signup. Also for bringing their barbeque grill. To Bill and Marilyn Hapke for Sign in for the Wash and Shine and Best Dish and also to Bob Hall and his sons Kevin and John plus their friend Vance along with Scott and Donna Hoaglund and Tim and Marcia Harney for all their help in setting up and taking down the tables and chairs for the event. Also thanks to the numerous people that volunteered to help with the cleanup.
